Lanyang Museum Taiwan

It’s hard to find a more spectacular museum – architecturally that is.

If you visit the Lanyang Museum in Yilan, plan to spend more time outside the building than in it. There is a pretty little lake with a winding path around it. I recommend enjoying the walk around the lake before stopping in for a little bit.

Once inside, you will see exhibits about the history of Yilan. It’s a good size museum and has a lot of information so if you are a history buff it is worth the tour.

Star Ferry, Hong Kong

The Morning Star boat by Star Ferry

What can you get in New York for $0.35? No much. Well, despite being just as expensive as New York (ref), this ferry trip and tourist attraction in only costs HKD$2.70.

The boats run every few minutes from 6:30 to 23:30 making it more convenient that most subways. Plus, the view is wonderful on the ride – especially at night.

If you come to Hong Kong this is a must-see!

More information can be found on the Star Ferry website.

The Golden Rock, Myanmar

Sorry women – this rock in men only. The Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is a sacred Buddhist site that is on top of the golden rock visible behind me. Due to the practice of male monks not being allowed to make physical contact with females, only men are allowed into the inner sanctuary.

Even as a male, the rules are very strict on what I could wear when I went in. I had to take off my sandals and wear a sarong. This is shows respect to the holy site that, according to legend, is balanced on a single strand of Buddha’s hair.

Whether you are a boy or a girl, it is still worth a visit if you are in Myanmar. It is amazing just to look at this rock and marvel at how close to the edge it can be without rolling off the edge.

Chao Phraya River, Thailand

Sunset over from the Chao Phraya river. Photo by Traveler Ni.

What an unforgettably romantic sunset over the Chao Phraya river! Everything seemed to align on this sunset trip. The boat, skyscrapers, and sunset all came together to make this perfect moment. If you ever visit Bangkok, take your special someone here.

How to get there:

There are many boat options available from the Sathon Pier. There are many other stops along the river but what makes this spot the best is its proximity to the subway system. You can buy your ticket in person or online.

Donggung Palace – Seoul, South Korea

The famous Donggung Palace in Korea’s ancient capital – Gyeongju. This was part of the ancient Solla palace complex that was created over 2000 years ago. It is beautiful and only a few kilometers away from city center. If you visit Korea, this is worth checking out.

Asahiyama Zoo, Hokkaido – Japan

Asahikawa has the coldest recorded temperature in all of Japan so visiting during the winter is freezing.

Zoos aren’t normally my cup of tea but the Asahiyama Zoo is special. With all the snow and daily penguin walk (as well as the newly renovated flamingo exhibit!) it is worth the trip. Check out the walk-through below.
